It was 11:30 when Max got back to his office. His secretary met him at the door. “Mr. Hawthorne, there’s a man here who says he’s Felicia’s brother. He wants to see you.”

Max paused, then nodded. “Let him in.”

A few minutes later, Greg stepped into the office. This was the first time they’d met face to face. Max crossed to his desk with a glass of water in hand and glanced at Greg as he came in. “Have a seat.”

Greg shook his head, keeping his distance. “I’m good. I just have a few things to say.”

Max studied him for a second, then sat down and set his glass on the desk. “Go ahead.”

Greg took a step forward. “I’m sure you saw last night’s news. Have you thought about what you’re going to do about the people who went after my sister online?”

Max drummed his fingers quietly against the desk. He looked up at Greg, his voice calm. “What do you think should be done?”

Greg’s mouth twisted. “So you haven’t thought about it at all.” There was a hint of bitterness in his voice.

Max didn’t reply.

Greg pulled out a photo and slid it across the desk. “I tracked down three of the ringleaders. Do you recognize any of them?”

Max picked up the picture. It was a group shot. Andrea sat on a stool in the middle, three other girls crowded around her, all of them smiling for the camera like nothing could touch them. He set the photo down and met Greg’s eyes. “I don’t care what you do. But remember, you should only take on what you can handle.”

Greg’s jaw tightened. “My sister was attacked for no reason. Maybe you can stand on the sidelines and act like it doesn’t concern you, but I can’t. And let me give you a piece of advice. You don’t know what you can handle until you try.”

Max’s gaze darkened, but he didn’t say anything.

Greg turned to leave, then paused with his hand on the door. “It’s true. We owe the Hawthorne family. But one day, we’ll pay you back. With interest.”

Luke was silent for a few seconds, trying to keep his frustration in check. “So what are you going to do?”

“I’m going to take them to court.”

“All right,” Luke said. “If you need anything, just call.”

“Thanks. How’s Felicia?”

“The doctor just checked. She’s at eight centimeters.”

“Okay.”
