Kieran’s POV.
Isla slept curled against my chest, her black hair spilling across my shoulders like ink. She always had it woven in a fighting braid and curled tightly into a bun.
It felt good to see her let it loose. With me.
Unbidden, my fingers twirled a strand of her hair, worrying it as I just watched her.
Watched the slow rise and fall of her chest. My heart tugged.
Slowly, my eyes dropped to her bare arms. To the lean muscles that rippled underneath her skin. Evidence of her training and hard work. Unlike Astra, Isla had never been afraid of a little roughness.
She was honest. Solid and real.
Moved, I lowered my head and pressed a kiss to arm. She stirred.
“You’re up?” Isla murmured, blinking sleepily as she turned to face me.
“Just thinking.” I gave her a small smile, but Isla was fully up now and staying with me with a worried crease between her brows.
“Why? About the pack?”
“No.” I pulled back slightly, adjusting the pillow and sitting up. “About you.”
Isla followed my move. With the sunlight filtering in from the window, her tanned skin glowed golden as she frowned. “Regreting your choice of luna?”
“No, I’m just worried you won’t adapt to court life.” I explained with a sigh.
This woman was designed for me.
After my time with Isla, I went back to the house but it was empty.
I stood in the doorway of the room I had shared with Astra for the past year, staring at bare walls and stripped furniture. The rugs were gone. The tapestries were gone. Even the curtains had been pulled down, leaving the windows naked and cold.
"What the hell?"
I strode through the chambers, my boots echoing against the stone floors. The chest where Astra kept her jewelry was empty. The cabinet that held her family's heirlooms had been cleaned out. The pantry, the cellar, the storeroom where she kept the Hale ledgers, all of it, gone.
“A-Alpha.” One of the maidsspoke. “Luna Astra and her ladiesmaid a-are gone. They left in the middle of the night and t-took everything.”
