“Renee, how did you know we were here?” Lexi asked, and the second Carter saw me, his face went stormy-

so dark it was almost scary.

“What can you do besides stalking me?” he snapped.

That was when I realized they were having a get–together, and Lexi’s words all but announced to everyone

that I’d come to stake them out.

“Carter, don’t be like that,” she said softly. “Renee must know she was wrong and came to apologize, so

please don’t treat her this way.”

I took a big step back from her touch. “I’m not here for him.”

They clearly didn’t believe me, because I’d done this kind of thing enough times that they were used to it.

And since this floor was reserved for his circle, I looked around and realized Landon wasn’t there. I pulled out my phone and saw he’d texted earlier that he’d gone back to the office for an emergency meeting and I didn’t

need to come.

“Carter, stop,” Lexi pleaded. “If she leaves, you’ll just get upset again.”

“Let go of me,” I said, and when Lexi yanked hard

er, I shook her off.

“Renee, don’t–ah!” she cried, and the next second there was a loud thud as she slammed into the corner of a

table.

I scoffed and turned to leave, but Carter grabbed my arm and yanked me back.

“Apologize,” he ordered.

I wrenched free, and the way he kept getting challenged over and over had his patience snapping.

“Don’t make me say it again,” he warned.

I let out a cold laugh. “Please. Does she deserve an apology? If she got down on her knees and begged, I’d

accept that.”

His expression twisted, and before he could lunge again, one of his bros hurriedly pulled him back.

“Don’t do this,” someone said. “We’re all family–this is going to get ugly.”

Lexi’s eyes flicked around, confused, because they’d never defended me like this before.

Carter sneered, “Family? I haven’t even married her. Unless she apologizes to Lexi, there’s no wedding to talk

“Then there’s nothing to talk about,” I said.

Carter assumed I was still angry. After all, I’d never given him attitude like this before.

“It’s been a year and you’re still throwing a tantrum,” he said harshly. “If you hadn’t insisted on making a big

deal out of one tiny thing, none of this would’ve happened.”

“Thanks for not marrying me–bullet dodged,” I said. “And I’m already married, so stop harping on that one

little thing.”

He scoffed. “Your tricks to get my attention just keep changing. In a few days, are you going to tell me you’ve

already had a baby? Who would you even marry besides me?”

He’d been so certain I’d never leave that he’d felt free to hurt me again and again, all for Lexi.

I didn’t want to keep arguing, and I didn’t even want to breathe the same air as him, because my chest felt tight just standing there.

The moment I walked away, Carter exploded and kicked a table so hard it flipped over.

“Carter, don’t,” someone said, trying to calm him down. “Renee’s actually a good woman. If you keep this up,

you’ll be the one who regrets it.”

“I’m not going to regret anything,” he shot back. “She’d never stop wanting me.”
