Carter gave a cold snort and ignored Wesley’s outstretched hand. Instead, he looked at him with open warning.
“I appreciate that you saved Larissa,” he said bluntly, “but I’d still prefer if you stayed away from her.”
Larissa nearly laughed and raised her thumb in Carter’s direction.
Her brother really had nerve. Few people dare to speak so boldly to Wesley.
Wesley simply lifted an eyebrow. His tone remained calm, but there was a clear edge of challenge in his
voice.
“That won’t be happening,” he said. “I didn’t just save Larissa’s life. We’re also business partners. I’ve known her longer than you have.”
No one had the right to tell him to keep his distance from Larissa. He would never stay away from her.
Carter narrowed his eyes and didn’t bother hiding the hostility.
“Larissa, you should stay away from this old man,” he said bluntly. “Just looking at him, you can tell he’s
trouble.”
Larissa quickly stepped between them before things could escalate.
“Mr. Robinett has helped me a lot,” she said, trying to calm him. “Please don’t do this.”
Carter’s fists tightened at his sides as he glared at Wesley.
“So what?” he shot back. “I’m keeping an eye on you. Don’t think you can get close to my sister. Larissa and I are family–you’re just an outsider.”
A slow smile tugged at Wesley’s lips.
“I’ll treat Larissa well,” he replied evenly. “But you should stop treating her like a child. She’s capable of making her own decisions. Larissa is an adult now. She’s long past the age of needing a big brother to watch over her.”
Larissa looked from one man to the other and couldn’t help sighing with helpless amusement.
Both of them were fully grown adults, but they were arguing like boys.
“Alright, that’s enough. Stop arguing,” Larissa said quickly. “Thea is still inside. Let’s check on her.”
Just then, the doctor stepped out of the hospital room. He told them the wound had already been cleaned and treated and that Thea only needed some time to rest and recover,
Larissa finally let out a quiet sigh of relief.
Carter shifted his attention away from Wesley and followed Larissa into the room.

He walked quickly to the bedside. When he saw Thea’s injured hand and her pale, fragile face, his eyes filled with concern.
“How are you feeling?” he asked softly. “Does it still hurt?”
When Thea saw him, she forced a weak smile. “I’m fine, Carter.”
Of course, she wasn’t really as fragile as she looked. But moments like this were perfect for winning sympathy and maybe bringing them a little closer.
She shot Larissa a subtle look.
Larissa understood immediately and spoke up.
“Carter, I’m still shaken from what happened earlier. I’m not feeling very well. I should go back to the hotel and get some rest. Could you stay here and help take care of Thea for me?”
Her tone turned serious.
“If she hadn’t stepped in and blocked that attack for me, I might have been badly hurt. She saved my life.”
Carter looked at the weak girl lying in the hospital bed. Thinking about how she had taken an attack for Larissa made his heart soften. He nodded.
“Don’t worry. I’ll take good care of her. You should head back to the hotel and get some rest.”
