Sally cleared her throat and praised, “I didn’t expect Julia’s grades to be this good,” she said warmly. “You truly carry our blood. Of course you deserve a reward.”
She reached under her pillow, pulled out a black bank card, and handed it to Julia.
“Julia, this card holds my private savings. There’s five hundred thousand dollars in it. Take it and spend it however you like. Buy whatever you want.”
To Sally, that amount was already very generous.
But to Julia, who was used to spending large sums, it felt almost insulting. That money was barely more than pocket money.
Still, she hid her feelings well. She accepted the card quickly and smiled brightly. “Thank you, Grandma.”
Harlan stood nearby, watching the cheerful family moment with quiet awkwardness.
Sally had always cared only about blood relatives.
Back when Larissa lived with them, Sally had disliked her from the start.
Harlan had never mattered much either.
Right now, though, he felt especially uncomfortable.
Sally didn’t even look at him.
Instead, she turned to Morris.
“Morris,” she said, her voice heavy, “my health keeps getting worse. Go bring Larissa here to take care of me. Maybe I’ll start feeling better if she’s around.”
Morris hesitated, clearly troubled. He was about to speak, but Julia quickly jumped in.
“Grandma, Larissa must be busy with her own life now. She doesn’t have time to take care of you.”
The moment Sally heard that, she started coughing in anger.
“I don’t care!” she snapped. “I want her here!”
She glared at Morris. “If you don’t want your mother to die, go get Larissa and bring her here to look after me.”

Worried about his mother’s health, Morris could only nod. “Mom, I’ll call her now. I just… don’t know if she’ll agree to come.”
Sally sneered. “We raised her. It’s generous of me to let her come take care of me. What, does she think she’s too important now?
“The SAT is over. What could she possibly be busy with? Is anything more important than my health?
“Tell her to come here right away and look after me. If she refuses, send someone to bring her here.”
Morris wanted to tell his mother that Larissa was no longer the quiet girl who let people push her around.
But thinking about his mother’s poor health, he held back. Larissa had always been soft- hearted. Maybe she would still come.
He quickly took out his phone and called her.
The line connected, and Larissa’s cool voice came through.
“What is it?”
Morris forced himself to continue. “Larissa, your grandmother hopes you can come to the hospital and take care of her. She’s very sick.”
“Grandmother?”
There was a brief silence.
Then Larissa spoke calmly, “I don’t have a grandmother. Who is this? Do I know you?”
Morris froze. He hadn’t expected that answer and suddenly didn’t know what to say.
“Larissa, it’s me. Your dad. Your grandmother is seriously ill. She wants to see you.”
He tried again to persuade her.
Larissa gave a cold laugh.
“Morris, stop bothering me with your family matters.
“When I lived with you, I did everything I could for that family. What did I get in return?
“And now you expect me to come back and take care of her? Why should I? Aren’t you
