Chapter 40 The Bet That Shook the Room
As the tension rose, Tom quickly stepped in to smooth things over.

“Mrs. Sowle is right,” he said calmly. “The school will treat every student fairly. Since Larissa has been accepted into Marcrest High, she is our student. We won’t expel her so easily.”
The parents looked at each other and didn’t dare push the issue
Priscilla refused to let it go.
any further.
“Marcrest High is a top school,” she said. “Are you really going to let Larissa stay just because you don’t want to offend her family? She has poor character and bad grades. The school should treat every student the same.”
She crossed her arms. “I still demand that Larissa be expelled.”
After speaking, she shot meaningful looks at the other parents.
One by one, they joined in, all asking the school to remove Larissa.
Ruby was so mad that she pressed a hand to her chest. She wanted to argue back, but her face had gone pale. Larissa noticed at once. She could tell her mother wasn’t feeling well. This needed to end quickly.
Larissa stepped forward.
“Since everyone keeps talking about my grades,” she said clearly, “then let’s settle it with grades. The midterm exam is tomorrow.”
She continued, her voice steady. “If I make the top ten in my grade, you all will apologize to me in front of the whole school. You’ll bow and admit you were wrong. But if I don’t make the top ten, I’ll leave Marcrest High on my own.”
The room exploded in shock.
Daphne almost wanted to give Larissa a thumbs–up.
She’s got guts. But top ten? With her scores?
The top ten spots were almost always taken by students from Class A.
Even Class C getting one spot was rare.
This sounded like a wild boast.

The parents stared at each other, then burst out laughing.
“Ms. Larissa, you must be joking. Top ten? You?”
“Yeah, that’s impossible.”
Priscilla laughed loudly, like she had just heard the most ridiculous joke.
“Larissa, you really think I don’t know what you’re capable of?” she said mockingly.

“Are you seriously going to make this bet with us? My daughter has to study extremely hard every single day just to get into the Top 10. You barely finished basic schooling, and you think you can make the Top 10?”
She shook her head.
“If I were you, I’d be smart and face reality. Just leave the school now. If you leave early, it won’t be as embarrassing. People still don’t know your true level yet. Otherwise, when you lose, you’ll probably try to back out of the bet.”
Larissa’s eyes were steady and firm.
“When I say something, I mean it,” she said. “Mrs. Turner, do you dare to take this bet? If I win, you and the others must bow and apologize to me in front of the entire school. If I lose, I will leave Marcrest High.”
Ruby looked at Larissa with worry, but she still chose to trust her daughter’s decision.
Priscilla was sure Larissa would lose. Since this would achieve her goal, she quickly agreed.
“Fine. It’s a deal. Just make sure you don’t go back on your word when you lose.”
The other parents agreed as well.
They had been worried Larissa might stay at Marcrest High using her status as the heiress. If she really wanted to stay, they probably wouldn’t have been able to stop her.
None of them believed Larissa actually had any chance of making the Top 10.
Tom was extremely surprised. He never expected Larissa to be this bold.
But he quickly regained his composure.
“Then it’s settled,” he said. “I will act as the witness. When the results come out, both sides should return to the school and honor the agreement.”
Priscilla felt secretly pleased. She thought Larissa was digging her grave.
