Chapter 427 Side Story: The World’s Number One Hacker?
“How many hostiles are we looking at? Where are the professors being held?”
A young soldier named Zack Peterson stepped forward.
“Sir, I’m a Britonia University computer science graduate. I handle cybersecurity for this unit. I might be able to help.”
Larissa hadn’t realized she had that kind of talent in her unit.
She nodded. “He might actually be useful. Let him try.”
Killian exhaled a long sigh.
“They hired the second-ranked hacker in the world. The guy I brought in earlier has a name in international circles, but he’s not in the same league.
“If your man is only average, he won’t crack it.
“We might need the number-one hacker in the world to break into that mall’s surveillance.”
Killian led them into the security operations room.
“Chief Brogdon, we can’t crack it. I’m sorry.”
“Chief Brogdon, I can confirm it’s the world’s number-two hacker on the other side. Only the number-one is going to get us in. Otherwise—”
Zack sat down at the console, and his fingers started flying over the keyboard.
“Chief Brogdon. Let me take a crack at it.”
He didn’t believe it. It was a surveillance feed. How hard could it be?
There was no way he couldn’t break a surveillance feed.
Zack’s fingers hammered the keys. Sweat was beading on his forehead.
The seconds ticked by. Every eye in the room was locked on the screen.
Then Zack’s hands stopped. His brow was drawn tight, and the expression on his face was bitter.
“I can’t do it. Their defense is way beyond me. I can’t get in.”
Killian’s expression said, I told you so.
Then, Terry spoke. “I might have an option. I know a hacker. I don’t know if he’s ranked number one, but his skills are top-tier. Let me call him.”
Larissa shot him a look. He wasn’t about to call her, was he?

She remembered: back in Marcrest, they’d worked a mission together protecting cultural artifacts.
They’d added each other as contacts afterward.
They’d never actually kept in touch. She’d forgotten the whole thing.
If she’d thought about it at all, she’d have deleted him from her contacts ages ago.
Sure enough, Terry pulled out his phone and dialed.
Her phone rang the instant his call went through.
Every pair of eyes in the room swung toward her.
Terry’s own expression was somewhere between shock and disbelief.
With all of them watching, her face didn’t move.
“I’ll try.”
Under every stare in the room, she sat down calmly at the terminal.

Her fingers moved across the keyboard like butterflies. Line after line of code streamed down the screen.
Everyone held their breath.
The people who knew what they were looking at could see it: her work was clean, elegant, and miles above anything normal.
No wonder she was their instructor. No wonder the command had sent her in to lead this op.
This unit was full of hidden talent, and she was at the top
of it.
Second by second, the defenses on the screen started to give.
