"Superior?" Jenna scoffed, her face twisting with bitter disdain. "You're all just biased! Chloe clearly cheated!"
Alaric slowly raised his eyes, his tone dangerously frigid. "You're accusing her of cheating? Let's see the proof."
Jenna puffed out her chest. "The proof is obvious! The technology theme was deliberately rigged in her favor!"
She didn't dare mention Chloe's marriage to Preston Hayes out loud, so she desperately clung to the subject matter as her only weapon.
But the words struck a chord with Isabella.
Vantage Corp was a global tech empire. Since Chloe had spent years glued to Preston's side, she naturally had intimate knowledge of the industry's jargon.
Isabella turned her piercing gaze on Chloe. "Is that true?"
Chloe casually removed her headset and walked out of the booth, her expression perfectly serene.
"I asked you yesterday if you wanted to switch the topics."
Isabella's brows snapped together. She finally remembered that Chloe had indeed mentioned something about it yesterday.
But back then, she had been so utterly dismissive of Chloe that she hadn't bothered to process the offer.
"You could have explicitly explained why instead of vaguely throwing it out there."
Isabella snapped, her tone dripping with resentment. Waving a hand dismissively, she added,
"Whatever. I forfeit."
Desperate to salvage the moment, she turned back to her father. "Dad, why don't we—"
The words died in her throat. She realized that Alaric's gaze had never once left Chloe. He hadn't spared his own daughter a single glance, completely oblivious to her presence.
Chloe noticed the strange intensity, too.
The middle-aged man in front of her was staring with a profound, almost overwhelming focus that felt entirely out of place.
She frowned slightly. Just then, Alaric broke the silence. "Are you... Chloe Reed?"
"I am. And you are?" Chloe nodded cautiously.
