Tears welled up in Danielle’s eyes, and she fought to keep them from falling. “If Niki asks about me, just tell her that Mommy is working on something very important, and I’ll take her for her favorite strawberry cake when I’m done.”
“Alright. Just take care of yourself and don’t get too worn out,” Vivian finally relented. “Don’t worry about Niki. I’ll take good care of her. Just come back soon when you’re finished.”
“Okay. Thanks, Mom.”
Danielle hung up and clutched the phone tightly, the tears finally streaming down her face. She couldn’t bring herself to tell her mother about the miscarriage. Her mother was getting older and wasn’t in the best of health; she was afraid the shock would be too much, and even more afraid of the pained, self-reproachful look she knew would be in her mother’s eyes.
“You’re awake? How are you feeling?”
Gian’s voice came from the doorway. He was carrying a thermal container and walked in quickly.
Danielle hastily shook her head. “I’m fine, just a little tired.”
Gian set the container on the bedside table and opened it, releasing a faint, fragrant aroma. “I had our housekeeper make some light broth. You just had a procedure, so you need something easy to digest to get your strength back.”
He ladled a bowl of the warm liquid and handed it to her. “Here, drink it while it’s hot.”
Danielle took the bowl and sipped it slowly. The broth was comforting, with a subtle sweetness from the dates that warmed her stomach and her heart as it went down. She looked up at Gian, her eyes filled with gratitude. “Gian, thank you. You’re always taking such good care of me.”
