Doubt began to creep into Danielle’s mind as well. She thought about the series of recent events: the incident at the engagement party, Vincent Gaylord being placed under investigation, Harold founding a new company, the close contact between Jake and Harold, and now, her and Lorie losing their babies at the same time.
Could all of this really be a coincidence? It felt as if someone was pulling strings behind the scenes.
“I don’t care who’s behind this,” Kirsten said, her face cold. “I won’t let them get away with it.”
Gian nodded. “I’ll have my people look into anyone who has had recent contact with NextCore and Ninesky, especially any movements from Harold and Jake.”
Just as Gian was about to say more, Kirsten shot him a meaningful look. The red veins in Danielle’s eyes had spread to the corners, and her lips were completely devoid of color. She was clearly at her limit. Gian understood, suppressing his anger and softening his tone. “Alright, let’s not talk about these upsetting things. You need to rest. We’ll be right here with you.”
Danielle nodded. As the tension in her body finally eased, her eyelids felt as heavy as lead. Gian tucked the thin blanket around her, while Kirsten gently brushed the sweat-dampened hair from her forehead. They fell into a comfortable silence, leaving only the rhythmic beeping of the machines to accompany her steadying breath.
