“Wasting time on this will only delay the rest of the work,” Lorie continued, her tone laced with a deliberate sense of superiority. “Don’t worry. I’m not going to mess up the NextCore project.”
Danielle’s fingers paused over her keyboard as she glanced up at Lorie. With her perfect makeup and impeccably tailored suit, Lorie radiated the air of the boss’s wife, clearly uninterested in the technical minutiae. Danielle didn’t press the issue. “Fine,” she said coolly. “I’ll put the remaining notes in a document and email it to you. Contact me if you have any questions.”
With that, Danielle closed her laptop and stood up to leave the project area. As she reached the door, a few engineers she’d worked late with gathered around her. “Chief Engineer Crawford, are you really leaving?” one asked, his voice full of reluctance. “If we run into problems with the project, can we still ask you for help?”
“Yeah, we feel lost without you here,” another added.
Danielle smiled and patted a young engineer on the shoulder. “Don’t worry, everything is clearly laid out in the documentation. If there’s something you really can’t solve, you can also talk to Secretary Langley. I’m just leaving the team, not Northridge City. We might have a chance to work together again in the future.”
As she spoke, a commotion started at the office entrance. Lorie’s assistant wheeled in a serving cart laden with exquisitely packaged afternoon tea: pink and white macarons, tiramisu dusted with gold leaf, and limited-edition pour-over coffee. It was all from a trendy dessert shop downtown that required a membership or an inside connection to get an order, as they only made fifty servings a day.
“You’ve all been working so hard,” Lorie announced, walking over with a practiced smile. She personally handed a tiramisu to a nearby engineer. “This is a little something for everyone. As long as the project moves forward smoothly, I’ll arrange for more perks. Let’s work together to get this project done right.”
The office instantly buzzed with excitement. The same people who had been bidding Danielle a sad farewell just moments ago were now swarming the cart, grabbing desserts and showering Lorie with thanks.
“Thank you, Miss Gaylord! You’re too kind!”
“I’ve been wanting to try these desserts forever but could never get an order. You’re amazing, Miss Gaylord!”
Someone even turned to Danielle and said, “You can leave without any worries, Chief Engineer Crawford. With Miss Gaylord here, we’ll definitely get the project done!”
Danielle stood watching the scene, a sense of dark amusement rising in her. All it took was a few limited-edition pastries to make them switch allegiances so completely. The fickle nature of workplace relationships was, in its own way, refreshingly honest. She didn’t linger, turning instead toward the elevators.
The elevator descended to the ground floor, and as the doors opened, Danielle saw Alexander standing by the lobby entrance. Dressed in a dark gray suit, he was holding a paper bag.

I hope daniele will have no end game with alexander since whatever the reason is, he only give her too much grievencess. I hope there will be another male character with stronger present than alexander to have the end game with daniele. Hated that in the name of love or protection alexander can treat another woman better, not just once, but with this new lorie girl... Oh my blood pressure getting higher cause by the new plot :(...

OMG! Chapters 451-462 had me on edge. I wish we could also read Alexander's POV. I swear I want to punch him and Millie. This story is kind of a push and pull. The main character will win some, then lose some. Hope the writer gives Danielle a big win....
