Otherwise, the consequences would be unimaginable.
“He certainly hid it well,” Gian remarked. “All these years, he presented himself as this gentle, refined man, impeccably careful in everything he did. I never realized he was so calculating.”
“But Alexander must have known all along,” Danielle said, her gaze shifting to Alexander, who was still being pestered by Jake not far away. A complex mix of emotions stirred within her.
Yes, Alexander must have known from the start.
That’s why he had orchestrated such an elaborate scheme, using the phony bid for the 07 fighter jet as bait to lure Harold into his trap.
“There’s just one thing I still don’t understand,” Danielle said after a pause. “What is Harold really after? Besides these classified documents, it feels like he has another agenda.”
She had a nagging feeling that Harold’s ambitions ran much deeper. He had spent years laying the groundwork, building alliances, and stealing secrets. There had to be a larger conspiracy behind it all.
Was it for profit, or for some other unspeakable purpose?
Gian was silent for a moment before speaking slowly. “Perhaps his target isn’t just the 07 fighter jet technology.”
“Think about it. Ninesky’s position in the aerospace industry is becoming more and more important. If he could win you over, or control you, you would become a trump card in his hand,” he explained. “Then, not only would he get the core technology, but he could also use Ninesky’s platform to expand his own influence, and even shape the country's aerospace strategy.”
Danielle’s heart sank. Gian’s words were a wake-up call.
What Harold wanted was likely control over the entire aerospace sector—the power to dictate the industry’s direction. And she was the key piece in his plan to achieve that goal.
Just then, a faint commotion erupted from backstage. Although it was quickly suppressed, both Danielle and Gian keenly sensed that something was wrong.
“Trouble,” Gian said, immediately standing up, his eyes sharpening.
“Should we go check it out?” Gian asked in a low voice.
Danielle shook her head. “No.”
“Alexander must have been prepared for this. We should stay here and see how things unfold.”
She knew this was Alexander’s trap, and he surely had a contingency plan. Her job now was to protect herself, stay out of the way, and keep an eye on everyone else in the room to prevent anyone from causing trouble.
Harold seemed to sense her gaze and turned his head. He looked in her direction, his face still wearing that gentle smile, but it didn't reach his eyes.
Danielle met his gaze without flinching, her expression calm.

OMG! Chapters 451-462 had me on edge. I wish we could also read Alexander's POV. I swear I want to punch him and Millie. This story is kind of a push and pull. The main character will win some, then lose some. Hope the writer gives Danielle a big win....
