“Come in,” Alexander’s voice came from inside, steady and detached.

Even through the door, she could picture his cold expression.

Danielle pushed the door open and went in, finding Alexander sitting behind his desk, reviewing documents.

She asked pointedly, “Were you busy just now?”

Alexander looked up at her.

He set down his pen, leaned back slightly in his chair, and said calmly, “Not busy. I was just seeing Lorie out.”

He was completely candid.

“It seems you two are on good terms.”

Alexander looked at her, his voice even. “We’re not on any terms.”

He paused, then added, “Lorie is the representative sent by Vanguard Technologies. She was here today to discuss the details of the 07 project partnership. That’s all.”

Danielle was taken aback. He rarely bothered to explain such details. She had asked the question to provoke a reaction, never expecting such a thorough response.

It turned out he understood everything. His past behavior had just been a deliberate misunderstanding.

Alexander leaned back in his chair. “If she said anything out of line to you, you don’t have to pay it any mind.”

Clearly, he could read people well. He knew exactly what kind of person Lorie was, and he knew what Danielle was thinking.

Danielle offered a faint smile.

“If you had been like this in the past, maybe we wouldn't have had so many misunderstandings.”

Alexander paused.

“I’m sorry.”

“Raffy… he was always so disobedient growing up, so rebellious.”

She recalled what he was like as a child—a beautiful, cherubic boy who was exceptionally mischievous. She had tried gentle guidance and strict discipline, but he always found ways to resist, like an untamed colt that refused to be bridled.

“I was always trying to forcefully manage his temperament, but by the time he was five or six, he was getting more and more unruly.”

Danielle lowered her eyes. “Sometimes I even wondered if my parenting was wrong, if that’s what made him this way.”

“It has nothing to do with your parenting. It’s his innate personality,” Alexander said. “Some children are born with a rebellious streak. It can’t be completely changed by how they’re raised. You did the best you could.”

“He’s still young now. You could temporarily suppress him, but he resented it. Once he’s older and has the means to challenge you, he won’t listen to a single word you say.”

Danielle looked down, her fingers tracing the edge of the file. “It would be a lie to say I have no feelings for him,” she said softly. “After raising him for so many years, no matter how rebellious he was, I still watched him grow up.”

She paused, finally unable to hold back the question that worried her most. “Is he… going to be like that forever?”
