“Are you really just going to ignore him? Not care about him at all?”

Truthfully, her heart ached for the boy.

No matter how mischievous Raffy was, he was still just a child. Now that he was with someone like Harold, his future was uncertain, and she couldn't stop worrying.

Alexander’s expression was calm. He seemed to have a plan for this all along.

“A boy’s education needs to start early and be firm,” he said, his voice flat. “If standard discipline doesn’t change him, if anyone can manipulate him and make him lose his sense of right and wrong, it means our current methods are useless. Even if he acts obediently in front of us, his darker side will just come out behind our backs.”

He continued, “He’s lived a life of luxury, never having to lift a finger, which has created flaws in his character. If we keep indulging him and don't let him learn the hard way, his values and personality will set, and it will be nearly impossible to change him later on.”

Danielle stiffened, looking at him in disbelief. “So you’re doing this on purpose? You’re deliberately letting him go through hardship with Harold?”

She had always assumed Alexander was simply too busy to deal with Raffy. The thought that this was all part of his plan sent a chill down her spine, making him seem far too cruel.

Alexander slowly shook his head. “Not deliberate. It’s a choice.”

“We can’t stop Harold from adopting him. Rather than forcing Raffy to stay here and continue his unruly behavior, it’s better to let him experience the world. If he can learn from this, see the ugliness in people, and learn to distinguish right from wrong, it might not be a bad thing for him.”

Danielle took a deep breath, a heavy weight settling in her chest. She thought Alexander’s heart was made of stone, to be able to watch a child walk into unknown danger. But as she calmed down, she realized he had a point.

“Why not—”

Alexander looked directly at Danielle. “Because Raffy is his biological son.”

Danielle froze. The information was too much to process, and she just stood there, stunned.

“How could that be—”

“It was a strange twist of fate,” Alexander explained. “At the time, Millie believed she had a one-night stand with Alistair. I thought so, too. So did Alistair. It wasn’t until a year after Alistair’s death that I discovered the truth. Having Raffy raised as the Davidson family heir, with me as his guardian, was all part of their plan.”
