Alexander couldn’t help but find it darkly amusing, and deeply ironic. His own father had plotted against him. Danielle clenched her fists and looked at Alexander, wondering how he must have felt after learning all this, and how he had managed to endure it in silence for so many years.

He could have just given up or confronted them head-on, but that would have put her and Niki in danger. Besides, Harold and Jake’s plans were so complex and deeply entangled that it would take time to unravel them and counter-plan. The safety of Danielle and his daughter was paramount.

His vulnerabilities were too obvious, and he wasn’t fully confident he could take on such powerful forces. When it came to Danielle and their daughter, he had to be absolutely certain of his success.

“We’re not dating. We’re just pretending.”
