A faint smile touched Alexander's lips as he read the message, and some of the fatigue in his eyes seemed to melt away.
He quickly typed back, “Second phase of cooling is underway. Everything’s stable, temperature is down to -10°C, and the data looks good.”
After sending it, he hesitated for a moment before adding, “It’s so late. Why are you still awake?”
Her reply was almost instantaneous. “I can’t sleep. I’ve been thinking about you, worrying about how things are going.”
He gripped his phone, his fingers tightening slightly as a complex mix of emotions churned within him.
“Don’t worry too much,” he typed slowly, trying to make his tone sound as light as possible. “Everything is going according to plan. Parham and the team are here, so nothing will go wrong.”
A few minutes passed before Danielle replied.
“I’m just really worried about you,” she wrote. “It’s freezing in Antarctica, and with that storm coming… you weren’t well to begin with. You have to take care of yourself.”
Then she added, “By the way, did you take your medicine?”
Reading that last line, Alexander’s heart clenched. A wave of indescribable emotion washed over him.
He had forgotten. In the rush to handle the chip’s preprocessing, the most important task had slipped his mind.
He squeezed the phone, his thumb hovering over the screen before he finally typed a lie. “I did. Don’t worry.”
He couldn’t bear to make her worry more.
After a moment of silence, Alexander slowly typed out another message and sent it. “Danielle, don’t care about me so much. I’m not worth it.”
As soon as he hit send, a cold sweat broke out on his palms. He knew the words were cruel, but he felt compelled to say them. He felt he owed Danielle too much—for the past misunderstandings and hurt, for the constant worry he was causing her now. He didn't deserve such deep affection.
