Alexander froze, his chest heaving with unspoken emotions.

“Mr. Davidson! Mr. Davidson! There’s a problem!”

A frantic voice shouted from outside the door.

Alexander’s heart dropped, and a sense of dread instantly washed over him.

He quickly typed a reply to Danielle, “Something’s come up. We’ll talk about this when I get back.”

Without waiting for a response, he grabbed his parka from the back of the chair and rushed out the door.

The moment he opened it, he was met with the panicked face of Parham, the lead engineer. Snowflakes clung to his forehead, and his expression was one of pure alarm.

“Mr. Davidson, we have a situation!”

“What’s the panic? Slow down and tell me what happened,” Alexander said calmly as he put on his parka, his fingers working the buttons with steady hands.

“The test chip! The core test chip is gone!” Parham’s voice trembled. “I was just in the restroom, gone for ten minutes at most. When I came back, the chip was missing!”

“What?”

That chip was not just the core technology of the Phoenix-07 project; it was the culmination of countless hours of work from the entire research team. The data it contained was a matter of national security. If it were to be leaked, the consequences would be catastrophic.

“Gather everyone immediately and lock down the station. No one enters or leaves without authorization,” Alexander commanded, his voice cold. “Conduct a full sweep of the lab, hallways, every room, including ventilation shafts and storage closets. Don’t miss an inch. And pull up all the surveillance footage. Focus on the lab’s perimeter and all entry and exit points.”

“Yes, right away!” Parham didn’t dare delay, turning and scrambling toward the communications room, nearly tripping in his haste.

He turned and went back inside, heading straight for the surveillance room. It was already crowded, with everyone staring intently at the monitors, their faces grim.

“Mr. Davidson, the camera at the lab entrance shows that after Parham left, only Leo went in. He grabbed a file and came out less than two minutes later,” the technician in charge of surveillance reported, pointing at the screen.

“Who is Leo? Where is he now?” Alexander asked in a low voice.

“He’s a research assistant. He’s in the lab right now, helping with the search.”

Alexander immediately had Leo summoned.

The young man, a recent graduate, looked nervous under Alexander’s sharp gaze, fidgeting awkwardly.
