Kathie followed Sammie’s gaze to Rebecca, the smile in her eyes holding a playful glint. She gently swayed the arm linked with his. “Oh, so you two know each other.”
“I noticed her earlier in the airport. She’s absolutely beautiful, with such a great presence. What’s your relationship?”
The question sounded casual, but every word was a calculated probe. She knew Sammie’s personality all too well—cold, quiet, and distant with everyone. For him to chase after someone in such a state, to personally grab their wrist… this woman was clearly someone important.
Sammie’s brow furrowed, his lips pressing into a hard, thin line. He was silent for a few seconds before forcing out three words. “We’re just friends.”
Three simple words, as light as air, but they cut through Rebecca’s heart like a dull knife. Her fingers, which were resting on the handle of her suitcase, tightened abruptly, her knuckles turning white as the light in her eyes instantly dimmed.
She looked up at Sammie, her gaze filled with a self-deprecating irony and a disappointment she couldn’t hide.
Just friends.
So that was it. All those years together, all the storms they’d weathered, amounted to nothing more than a dismissive “just friends.”
Kathie, seemingly oblivious to the tense atmosphere, simply nodded, her smile deepening. “Oh, for a second I thought she was your ex-girlfriend,” she said teasingly.
The remark made the air thick with an almost unbearable awkwardness.
Rebecca’s lips twisted into a faint, bitter smile. Without another glance at Sammie or another word to Kathie, she gripped her suitcase handle and turned, walking toward the airport exit.
Sammie didn’t speak. He simply raised a hand and pushed Kathie’s arm away.
His gaze returned to the direction Rebecca had gone.
Kathie looked at her empty hand, the smile on her face fading slightly, though she maintained a composed facade. She knew Sammie’s heart had never belonged to her.
And that woman, Rebecca, was likely to become the biggest complication in their relationship—and perhaps in the entire alliance between the Sammie's and Gardner families.
The airport continued to bustle with travelers, its noise a stark contrast to the silent, brewing storm between them.

Although she was one of the protagonist (and best friend of Danielle), I'm really annoyed with Kristen. What does she actually want? She wants to be completely free from Gian, whatever their business is. But when Gian doesn't care about her, she gets annoyed and overthinks. Hey, Kristen, the world doesn't revolve around you. You may follow your own feelings, but that doesn't mean you can ignore other people's feelings at all!...
It seems like this novel will end at chapter 5000. Every time one issue ends, another one pops up, and it seems like the author is just trying to drag it out. I'm starting to get tired of reading it....
I hope daniele will have no end game with alexander since whatever the reason is, he only give her too much grievencess. I hope there will be another male character with stronger present than alexander to have the end game with daniele.
