Gian found a hint of his own heavy burden lifting at her nonchalant attitude. He nodded, his tone serious. "Alright. I'll see you at the register office tomorrow."

The next morning, the crowd at the register office wasn't too large. Gian and Kirsten walked in side by side. Photos, signatures, and stamps—in less than half an hour, two small, foil-stamped marriage certificates were placed in their hands.
Kirsten held the certificate. It felt surreal. It seemed like only yesterday she was agonizing over a marriage of convenience, and today she was Gian's legal wife. The change was so fast it left her feeling a little disoriented.
The sun was bright as they stepped out of city hall, almost blinding. Gian handed one of the certificates to her, his voice solemn. "Kirsten, regardless of why we entered this marriage, from this day forward, I will fulfill my duties as a husband." He looked her in the eye, enunciating each word. "If you ever want a divorce, to pursue your own freedom, I will cooperate. I won't stand in your way."
Kirsten paused for a second, then smiled, tucking the certificate into her purse. "Don't worry, I'm not thinking about divorce just yet. After all, 'Mrs. Atwood' has a nice ring to it."
