Together, they lifted Alexander into the back seat of a modified snowcat parked nearby. This vehicle was more discreet than their previous SUV, its body covered in a camouflage coating that blended in with the ice, clearly specially prepared.
Sammie got into the driver’s seat, his fingers flying across the console. A series of complex codes flashed on the screen, and a red warning light quickly turned green.
“Anti-tracking system is active. It should block their positioning for now.” He glanced back at the two in the rear. “Hold on tight. We need to get out of here, fast.”
The vehicle's heater slowly filled the cabin, chasing away some of the biting cold.
Danielle let Alexander rest his head on her lap. The man’s consciousness was fading, and he was muttering something under his breath. She leaned in, straining to hear, and realized he was repeating the same words over and over.
“The chip… can’t lose it…”
His hand flailed unconsciously before finding and gripping Danielle’s wrist with a force so great it felt like it might shatter her bones.
Danielle’s heart lurched. She looked down at his pale face. “I know, I have the chip. It’s safe.”
The chip was hidden in the inner pocket of her thermal suit, tucked close to her heart. She had stolen it from Harold’s lab, and it contained all the evidence of his collusion with foreign powers and his embezzlement of national project funds. It was the key to bringing Harold down.
Sammie caught the scene in the rearview mirror, his hands tightening on the steering wheel.
After a moment of silence, he broke the stillness. “Mr. Davidson started investigating Harold’s dirty dealings six years ago.”
Sammie’s eyes remained fixed on the road ahead. “It wasn’t that he didn’t trust you back then. He was afraid you’d get dragged into this and be killed.”
