Alexander’s voice was fragmented, each word seeming to rip at his wound. “If I don’t make it—”
“Don’t you dare die!” Danielle clamped her hand over his mouth, her eyes red as tears streamed down her face uncontrollably. She stared at him intently. “Alexander, if you dare leave me, I’ll burn every last bit of this. I’ll let all your hard work go to waste, do you hear me?”
Seeing her tear-streaked face, Alexander’s chapped lips moved, a flicker of softness in his eyes. He wanted to raise his hand to wipe her tears away, but his arm felt like it was filled with lead.
Behind them, gunshots rang out, bullets thudding against the vehicle’s body. He glanced at the rearview mirror; their pursuers were still right on their tail, their headlights blinding.
“Don’t worry, I have a backup plan for this route,” Sammie said.
While maneuvering the vehicle, he pulled a satellite phone from the console and quickly dialed a number. “Send a team for pickup. I’m sending the coordinates to your phone. Also, call the police. Leak some of Harold and Lorie’s evidence to them now.”
After hanging up, he yanked the wheel again, and the snowcat veered onto a narrow, snow-covered track. The path was rough and flanked by towering ice mounds, perfectly obscuring them from their pursuers’ line of sight.
Danielle’s gaze shifted from the pouch to Alexander on the bed. His breathing was shallow, his face paper-white. His long lashes cast a faint shadow on his cheeks, making him look impossibly fragile.
She leaned close to his ear, her voice soft but fiercely determined. “We’ll turn in the evidence together, Alexander. You have to live. We still have to watch Harold and Lorie get what they deserve, and we still have to go home together. Do you hear me?”
Perhaps it was her voice, or perhaps the medicine was taking effect, but Alexander’s eyelashes fluttered, and he slowly opened his eyes. His vision was blurry, and it took a moment to focus on Danielle’s face. In his deep eyes, the usual coldness and calculation were gone, as was the ruthless decisiveness of the business world.

Although she was one of the protagonist (and best friend of Danielle), I'm really annoyed with Kristen. What does she actually want? She wants to be completely free from Gian, whatever their business is. But when Gian doesn't care about her, she gets annoyed and overthinks. Hey, Kristen, the world doesn't revolve around you. You may follow your own feelings, but that doesn't mean you can ignore other people's feelings at all!...
It seems like this novel will end at chapter 5000. Every time one issue ends, another one pops up, and it seems like the author is just trying to drag it out. I'm starting to get tired of reading it....
I hope daniele will have no end game with alexander since whatever the reason is, he only give her too much grievencess. I hope there will be another male character with stronger present than alexander to have the end game with daniele. Hated that in the name of love or protection alexander can treat another woman better, not just once, but with this new lorie girl... Oh my blood pressure getting higher cause by the new plot :(...
