As he approached, Danielle opened her mouth to ask what it was, but he was already holding the box out to her. The moment she opened it, a lustrous sheen caught her eye.
It was a jade bracelet. The stone was smooth and flawlessly polished, carved with an intricate floral pattern—the very one she had lingered on at the auction a few days ago.
“Do you like it?” Alexander’s voice was filled with anticipation. “I saw you staring at it for a long time that day.”
Danielle’s heart skipped a beat. As her fingers touched the cool jade, a warmth spread from her fingertips to the depths of her soul. She looked up at him and saw the smile in his eyes, along with a hint of nervousness he couldn’t quite hide.
“It’s a waste of money,” she said, but she slipped the bracelet onto her wrist. It was a perfect fit.
Alexander watched as the jade accentuated the slenderness and fairness of her wrist, the smile in his eyes deepening. “It’s not a waste if it’s for you.”
They walked into the living room side by side, immediately enveloped by a chorus of excited chatter. Raffy and Niki were sprawled on the carpet, playing with building blocks. The moment they saw them, they abandoned their toys and scrambled over.
“Daddy! Mommy!” Niki shot into Danielle’s arms like a little cannonball, looking up at her, eager for praise. “Raffy and I built a castle today!”
Raffy followed close behind, a shy smile on his face and a block still clutched in his hand. “Mommy, look.”
“That’s amazing,” Danielle said, bending down to stroke both of their heads, her eyes filled with gentleness.
Alexander watched the scene unfold, unable to suppress the smile spreading across his face. He picked up Niki and ruffled Raffy’s hair, filling the living room with a palpable warmth.
