"Mr. Atwood! What a coincidence! I didn't expect to run into you here," Kirsten' dad greeted smoothly.

He kept up the eager smile. "We were actually hoping to speak with you. We spotted your car and figured we'd say hello."

Gian frowned slightly. He glanced at Kirsten, who had her head bowed, clearly wanting nothing to do with her parents. He had a pretty good idea of what was coming.

He stepped out of the vehicle, his expression guarded. "Mr. Delaney. Ms. Delaney. Is there something I can help you with?"

Ms. Delaney hurried forward, her fake smile firmly in place. "Well, you see, Mr. Atwood..."

"Our family business has hit a bit of a rough patch lately. We're facing a severe cash flow issue."

"We were wondering if you might be willing to help us out. Perhaps step in as an investor."

"Don't worry, we'd never let you take a loss! The return on investment will be massive, I promise."

Mr. Delaney quickly backed her up. "Exactly, Mr. Atwood. Since you and our Kirsten are married, we're all family now."

"Just think of it as helping us out, which is really helping Kirsten, too."

Gian's eyes narrowed. Before he could shut them down, Kirsten shoved her door open and stumbled out of the car.

She looked absolutely mortified. Her face was pale, her eyes blazing with humiliation and rage. "Dad! Mom! What the hell are you talking about?" she demanded, her voice shaking.

"Kirsten, watch your tone!"

Ms. Delaney glared at her daughter, clearly annoyed. "We're just trying to look out for this family! You and Mr. Atwood are married now. Isn't it his duty to help us out?"

"We are not his family!"

Kirsten refused to be a leech.

Especially not on Gian.

Pointing an accusing finger at her parents, her voice cracked. "It's a fake marriage!"

"We only signed the papers to get you two off my back! Stop trying to hustle him for money!"

The declaration hit like a bomb. Both of her parents went completely rigid.

"A fake marriage? Kirsten, what kind of nonsense is this? You have a marriage certificate. How can it be fake?"

"Because it is!" Kirsten yelled, tears of frustration brimming in her eyes. "I told you a hundred times that Gian and I were just friends! You were the ones who bullied me into settling down!"

They turned and walked away.

Before leaving, Ms. Delaney threw one last disappointed, resentful glare at Kirsten.

Watching them disappear into the night, Kirsten's shoulders slumped. The dam finally broke, and the tears began to fall.

She turned and practically collapsed into Gian's chest, her whole body shaking with quiet sobs.

Gian stiffened for a second before slowly bringing his arms up. He awkwardly but gently rubbed her back, trying to comfort her.

The thick, electric tension from inside the car was entirely gone, replaced by the chill of the night air and the heartbreaking sound of her weeping.

The flickering streetlights cast long, shifting shadows over them as they stood together.

Looking down at the beautiful woman sobbing into his shirt, Gian felt a heavy weight settle in his chest.

He opened his mouth, desperately wanting to say the right thing, but the words wouldn't come.

So he simply held her, letting her cry until there was nothing left.
