The accusation hit a little too close to home. Mr. and Ms. Delaney exchanged awkward, guilty glances.
Kirsten' dad cleared his throat, attempting to salvage his dignity. "Kirsten, we are your parents. Of course we care about you."
"Care?" Kirsten let out a broken laugh. "Your idea of care was forcing me to marry Gian, and the second we divorce, tossing me into the Sammie family’s lap for a payout?"
"Your idea of care is standing over my hospital bed arguing about money instead of asking a doctor how I am?"
Her voice trembled as a lifetime of suffocating resentment finally boiled over.
"I did everything you ever asked! I learned whatever you told me to learn."
"I thought if I was just obedient enough, you might actually love me."
"But I was wrong. I was so incredibly wrong."
"I was never a daughter to you. I was a bargaining chip."
"Your company is your life, and Carter is your golden child."
"I’m just something to be traded."
Her words ripped Gian’s heart to shreds.
He stepped closer, gently wrapping his hand around hers. "Don't be afraid. I’m right here."
Kirsten slumped against Gian’s chest, the steady rhythm of his heartbeat making her realize just how truly alone she was in her own family.
"Kirsten, we didn't have a choice. You know the company is bleeding money. We wouldn't do this if we weren't desperate."
"Desperate?"
His threat dripped with such brutal promise that the room froze.
They knew Gian Atwood wasn't bluffing. The Atwood family’s power was absolute.
Terrified but seething, Ms. Delaney yanked her arm back. "Fine! Great!"
"You think you're so tough now that you're cutting us off?"
"Let's see how long you survive without our backing."
"You and Gian are going to crash and burn anyway."
Mr. Delaney pointed a shaking finger at her. "You’ll regret this."

Although she was one of the protagonist (and best friend of Danielle), I'm really annoyed with Kristen. What does she actually want? She wants to be completely free from Gian, whatever their business is. But when Gian doesn't care about her, she gets annoyed and overthinks. Hey, Kristen, the world doesn't revolve around you. You may follow your own feelings, but that doesn't mean you can ignore other people's feelings at all!...
It seems like this novel will end at chapter 5000. Every time one issue ends, another one pops up, and it seems like the author is just trying to drag it out. I'm starting to get tired of reading it....
I hope daniele will have no end game with alexander since whatever the reason is, he only give her too much grievencess. I hope there will be another male character with stronger present than alexander to have the end game with daniele. Hated that in the name of love or protection alexander can treat another woman better, not just once, but with this new lorie girl... Oh my blood pressure getting higher cause by the new plot :(...
