The officers scrambled behind the thick trunks of trees, returning fire toward the source of the ambush.
A fierce shootout erupted. Bullets tore through the dense foliage, ripping chunks of bark from the wood.
Using the trunk for cover, the Captain risked a glance forward. Through the brush, he saw Harold flanked by several men in black, making a mad dash for the border.
The men guarding him moved with lethal efficiency, their aim precise. They were clearly trained professionals.
"He's got backup."
The Captain yelled. "Split up! Flank them from both sides. Do not let them slip through!"
The squad immediately divided, creeping through the underbrush on the left and right, trying to pinch Harold's crew.
But Harold's mercenaries were ready. They locked down the chokepoints, pinning the police down with heavy suppressive fire.
The firefight raged for half an hour. Two officers took hits, and they still couldn't break through the defensive line.
Taking advantage of the chaos, Harold inched closer and closer to the border line, shielded by his men.
Watching the target slip away, the Captain ground his teeth in frustration, but he was pinned.
He knew that if this kept up, Harold would cross the line, and it would all be over.
Just then, Alexander arrived with a heavily armed security team.
They had parked at the edge of the jungle and sprinted through the woods toward the gunfire.
"Captain, we're here," Alexander's voice rang out.
He had brought a tactical unit.
Seeing the reinforcements, the Captain finally let out a breath. "Hurry! He's about to cross. We have to stop him!"
Alexander's professionals were faster and more agile.
