A long, tense silence stretched over the phone line. Danielle’s grip on her phone tightened, her knuckles turning white.
She could hear Alexander’s breathing, perfectly steady, without the slightest ripple of emotion, as if she had just asked him about the weather.
A few seconds later, his calm voice came through. "Yes."
The single, understated word struck her heart like a hammer blow, leaving her frozen in place.
"But don't worry," Alexander continued, his tone still placid. "Even after we’re engaged, I’ll continue to take care of you and Niki. I won't let you suffer."
Danielle let out a short, sharp laugh, as if she’d heard the most absurd joke in the world. But the sound was hollow, filled with a bleak sorrow. "Take care of me? Alexander, do you really think I still need you to do that?"
She took a deep breath, forcing down the lump forming in her throat as her voice turned cold. "I don't. You don't need to take care of me."
"You can see Niki, of course. You're her father, after all."
She paused, the pieces falling into place—her colleagues’ talk of a political alliance, the image of Lorie cradling her stomach. Any lingering sliver of hope she’d been clinging to was shattered.
"If this engagement makes you happy and helps the Davidson family, then… I wish you happiness."
As the words left her lips, Danielle felt a vital part of herself go hollow and empty.
The butterflies she once felt, the hopeful anticipation, the hesitation and struggle after they reconnected—it all vanished in that instant, leaving behind nothing but a cold, barren wasteland.
On the other end of the line, Alexander was silent for a moment, seemingly taken aback by her finality.
After a beat, he began, "Danielle, you…"
"You don't have to explain anything."
Danielle cut him off, her tone sharp and decisive. "I just have one last question for you."
In her dreams, she was back at their wedding. Alexander, dressed in a white tuxedo, took her hand, his eyes filled with tenderness.
But just as she thought happiness was within her grasp, the scene shattered, replaced by the image of Lorie on Alexander's arm as they walked into an OB-GYN clinic.
She jolted awake, her forehead slick with cold sweat.
Outside, the first light of dawn was breaking. The sky was beginning to brighten.
She got up and walked to the window, pulling back the curtains. The morning sun streamed in, but it did nothing to dispel the chill that had settled deep in her heart.
Today was the day she would leave Northridge City.
She walked to the closet and began to pack.

I hope daniele will have no end game with alexander since whatever the reason is, he only give her too much grievencess. I hope there will be another male character with stronger present than alexander to have the end game with daniele. Hated that in the name of love or protection alexander can treat another woman better, not just once, but with this new lorie girl... Oh my blood pressure getting higher cause by the new plot :(...

OMG! Chapters 451-462 had me on edge. I wish we could also read Alexander's POV. I swear I want to punch him and Millie. This story is kind of a push and pull. The main character will win some, then lose some. Hope the writer gives Danielle a big win....
