Seeing his anxious expression, Danielle felt a flicker of warmth. River Atwood was a kind man, but it was a kindness she was destined to be unable to accept.
She shook her head gently, her voice soft but firm. “Engineer Atwood, please don’t overthink it. My resignation has nothing to do with you. I just want to move back to Northridge City to take care of Niki. It’s nothing more than that.”
She paused before adding, “You are a very good person—upright, kind, and dedicated to your work. I’m sure you’ll meet someone much better than me someday and find your own happiness.”
River Atwood’s fingers tightened around the report, his knuckles turning white. He was silent for a few seconds before he finally spoke. “I understand.”
“I was too forward. I shouldn’t have imposed my own ideas on you.”
“I wish you all the best in Northridge City, and I hope Niki stays healthy and happy.”
“Thank you.” Danielle smiled. “I’ll need your help wrapping up the project during this final period. I’ll be in touch if there’s anything that needs clarification.”
“Of course.” River Atwood nodded and turned to walk back to the lab, his steps much slower than usual.
Danielle watched him go, a sense of wistfulness washing over her. She knew it took courage to reject someone’s kindness, but a clean break was better than a prolonged ache. It was better to be clear now than to let him hold onto false hope and cause more pain later.
In the following days, Danielle threw herself completely into the project handover.
