“Did you resign because of me?” Lorie asked, her voice laced with concern. “Is that why you won’t even have a meal with me now?”
She bit her lip. “You had such a bright future here. There must be a reason you’re so determined to leave. If I did something to upset you at work, you have to tell me.”
“After all,” she added, “I’d really hate to lose you as a colleague. We’ve always worked so well together.”
Danielle listened, a cold smile touching her heart. She had long heard about Lorie’s background—her father was a senior executive in the aerospace sector, virtually guaranteeing her a golden career path at the Aerospace Institute. Yet, Lorie constantly acted guarded around her, always finding ways to assert her ‘sovereignty’ over Alexander. This unwarranted sense of crisis struck Danielle as faintly ridiculous.
“Miss Gaylord, you really don’t need to be so tense.”
Danielle stopped walking, a faint smile playing on her lips as she met Lorie’s gaze calmly. “If Alexander truly likes you and only has eyes for you, then it wouldn’t matter how often I show up. I wouldn’t be able to catch his eye, let alone affect your relationship. The way you’re constantly pressuring me just shows how little faith you have in yourself—and in him.”
Lorie’s smile froze on her face, her fingers unconsciously clenching the hem of her clothes. Danielle’s words were like a needle, striking a precise and painful nerve. She really didn’t have any confidence, especially when she saw the way Alexander sometimes looked at Danielle, his eyes filled with a complex emotion she couldn’t decipher. It left her perpetually on edge.
