“I prepared this place a while ago for some relatives, but it’s perfect for you,” Gian explained as he helped them with their luggage. “The bedrooms are this way. I had Niki’s room decorated like a princess suite. I think she’ll like it.”
Niki ran into her room and gasped. The walls were pink, a white canopy bed stood in the center, and the shelves were filled with picture books and toys. She jumped with excitement. “Mommy, uncle Gian, look! It’s so beautiful!” She turned to Gian, her eyes full of gratitude. “Thank you, Gian.”

Evening fell over Northridge City. Vivian Linden, Danielle's mother, stood in her kitchen, wearing an apron as the steak in her pan sizzled, their aroma drifting out into the yard.
Danielle walked in holding Niki’s hand, and before she could even set down her bags, her mother was looking her up and down. “You’ve lost weight. You haven’t been eating properly.”
“I’m fine, Mom,” Danielle said, trying to soothe her. She turned to Gian, who was following them inside. “This is Gian, my friend. He’s been a huge help with the move.”
Gian stepped forward politely. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mrs. Linden. Danielle has told me so much about you.” He placed a few boxes of health supplements on the coffee table. “Just a little something. I hope you like them.”
Vivian’s eyes lit up as she took in Gian’s gentle and refined appearance. She took his hand and pulled him toward the sofa. “You shouldn’t have! Please, sit. Thank you for taking care of my Danielle.” She then turned to her daughter, giving her a pointed look and whispering, “Is this the ‘friend’ you told me about? He doesn’t look like just a friend. Is he my new son-in-law?”
Danielle’s cheeks flushed. “Mom, don’t be ridiculous. We’re just friends.”
