After dinner, Kirsten pulled Danielle out onto the balcony for a chat. A cool evening breeze drifted past them.
“Danielle, have you heard? The whole of Northridge City is buzzing about Alexander and Lorie’s engagement party. I hear it’s going to be an incredibly lavish affair, with all the big names invited,” Kirsten said, her tone full of gossip. “My parents and I got an invitation. Did you?”
Danielle shrugged, her voice neutral. “I did. I’m not going.”
“I knew you wouldn’t,” Kirsten said with a smile. “Those kinds of events are pointless anyway, just a bunch of fake pleasantries. You’re much better off now, with Niki, your career, and a great friend like Gian by your side. That’s better than anything.”
Looking out at the distant city lights, Danielle felt a profound sense of peace. “You’re right. I’m happy just the way things are. I don’t want to be dragged down by the past anymore.”

The next morning, Danielle took Niki to her new school to enroll. The campus was beautiful, with shady trees and a playground full of children.
The homeroom teacher was a kind woman who gave them a tour of the classroom and introduced them to the other kids. As Danielle led Niki inside, a familiar little figure caught her eye. Raffy was sitting by the window, reading a book.
