A familiar voice sounded from behind her. Kirsten turned to see Liam, dressed in a black suit and holding two glasses of champagne, smiling at her.
She accepted a glass, her tone distant. "Liam. It's been a while."
Liam took a sip of his champagne, his eyes scanning the crowd. "Danielle didn't come? I thought she might have come with you," he asked with a smile.
Kirsten raised an eyebrow. "Why? Do you miss her? If you do, just call her. Why are you asking me?"
Her sharp reply caught Liam off guard for a moment before he chuckled. "You've still got that fiery temper. I was just asking. After all, she and Alex used to..."
"The past is in the past," Kirsten cut in, her voice turning cold. "Danielle is doing very well now. She has her own career and a wonderful daughter, and she doesn't want to be bothered by things that are over and done with. So please, don't bring this up in front of her, and don't ask why she doesn't attend events like this."
The smile on Liam's face faded slightly. He nodded. "I understand. That was out of line."

The engagement party was in full swing, the air filled with a chorus of laughter and clinking glasses.
Alexander stood in the center of the hall holding a glass of red wine, his gaze distant. He had just finished dealing with wave after wave of well-wishers.
"Alex, she's my only daughter. You'd better treat her right," Mr. Gaylord said, clapping him on the shoulder. His eyes were full of both hope and scrutiny. "We've spoiled her a bit since she was a child, so she can be a little headstrong, but she has a good heart. You two build a good life together, and give me a grandchild soon."
