After the call, Nash went directly to Alexander's study. The air inside was stagnant, the atmosphere so heavy it was hard to breathe. Nash stood before the desk and handed Alexander a newly compiled file, his voice grave. "Mr. Davidson, Mr. Gaylord has been formally placed under police supervision. He is currently restricted from leaving Northridge City and must be available for questioning at all times."
Seated in a large leather chair, Alexander held an unlit cigarette, his gaze fixed on the file. There wasn't a ripple of emotion in his eyes. He gave a slow nod. "I see," he said, his voice low. "Any new leads from the police? About why the chandelier fell."
"I'll arrange it. It will be ruled an accident." Alexander gestured with his chin. He stubbed the cigarette out in an ashtray and rose to his feet, walking to the window. "Keep watch. Report any new developments immediately." Alexander's voice carried an authority that permitted no argument. Nash acknowledged the order and left, leaving Alexander alone in the study.

Meanwhile, at the safe house where Mr. Gaylord was being held, surrounded by federal agents, Jake paced back and forth anxiously. He had rushed over from the hospital as soon as he heard the news, desperate to see Mr. Gaylord. He knew the man held too many secrets—secrets that, if exposed, would not only ruin the Gaylord family but also implicate the Davidsons.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Davidson. Mr. Gaylord is a protected person of interest. No visitors are allowed," the officer on duty said, his voice cold and unyielding.
