After hanging up, Danielle leaned back on the sofa, her mind refusing to quiet down. The accident at the engagement party, Mr. Gaylord being placed under protection, and Alexander's warning call—all the pieces were clicking into place, making her feel as if an invisible net was slowly tightening.
Meanwhile, at the hospital, Lorie lay in bed, her face pale. The shock from the engagement party had risked her pregnancy, and she had been rushed to the emergency room. As soon as the nurse finished her IV drip, she anxiously called Alexander, wanting him to come and be with her.
"Alex, I'm at the hospital. Can you come see me? I'm a little scared," Lorie said, her voice weak and laced with grievance.
Alexander stared at his computer screen, his tone flat. "I can't get away right now. I have to deal with the press about the party and cooperate with the police investigation." "I'll send Nash to stay with you. If you need anything, just tell him."
Lorie's hand tightened on her phone, a wave of disappointment and unease washing over her. "You're still busy this late? Can't you spare even a little time to come see me and the baby?"
"The situation is critical. I have to stay here and handle it," Alexander said coolly. "You get some rest. The doctor said you need to stay calm, so don't overthink things." Before Lorie could reply, he hung up.
