Holt had left too. Only Mona and Gary remained, and neither of them could sleep that night. Especially Gary—he’d always been a big spender, and now Marie had slashed his budget down to fifty thousand.
“Fifty thousand—where the heck did she even come up with that number? And she’s blaming it on the economy? Since when has the economy ever affected the Dawson family?”
What nonsense about a bad economy. Gary was so furious he could barely breathe.
Mona sighed. “Alright, just go to bed.”
“Go to bed? How am I supposed to sleep after this? She’s clearly doing this to screw us over!”
Exactly.
Marie was definitely out to get them—Mona could feel it too.
Still—
“If she wants to mess with us, who says we can’t mess with her?”
Gary was stunned.
“Relax,” Mona said confidently. “She won’t last three days running this house before she’s begging me to take over again.”
She said it with complete certainty; she’d already figured out exactly how she was going to deal with Marie.
Gary was still seething, but not entirely irrational. Hearing Mona’s words about Marie begging her for help made him scoff.
“You’ve got to be kidding me. That’s Marie—the Dawson family’s golden girl! You really think she’d beg anyone?”
Mona smirked. “She might be the Dawson family’s darling, but she’s also the Tom family’s daughter-in-law now.”
Gary froze again.
“This was her own choice,” Mona continued sharply. “Since she was so eager to marry into the Tom family, she can damn well follow the Tom family’s rules.”
That word “rules” came out of Mona’s mouth like a venomous hiss.
At that moment, she didn’t even realize just how much she sounded like a wicked mother-in-law.
Of course, Marie wasn’t exactly the type to play nice either...
From the moment she stepped through that door, she’d embodied the perfect image of a defiant, insufferable daughter-in-law.
Not that she ever cared to act otherwise in front of them.
Gary mulled over Mona’s words and found her reasoning sound. “So you’ve already figured out how to deal with her?”
“Go to sleep,” Mona said. “You’ll see tomorrow morning.”
Gary fell silent. So she really had everything planned out? Good.
If Marie wanted to play house, then they’d show her just how hard it was to run the Tom family.
Hopefully she’d end up crying her eyes out—so much she’d never dare to take charge again.
Upstairs, after all the chaos, Marie was completely exhausted. She showered, then collapsed onto the bed.
While Derrick was still in the bathroom, she called Stella.
But it was Abraham who picked up.
Oops—she’d forgotten to check the time. Why did he have to sound so serious?
Her sudden change in tone caught Abraham off guard. Stella’s pregnancy had already made her act differently, and now Marie too?
