But asking for a million tonight... Mona suddenly felt a headache coming on.
“I might need to hold off on the money for a bit,” she said.
“What? Why?” Reese’s voice rose immediately; she couldn’t understand. Mona had never delayed before—every time she asked for money, it was sent right away. So why the hold-up now?
“There’s been a bit of an accident on this end,” Mona explained. “But don’t worry; I’ll have it sorted in three days at most. In three days, I’ll send you the million.”
Three days—just enough time for Marie to hand back financial control of the family.
Reese still wasn’t happy. “But what about my surgery tomorrow? You know the hospital needs payment up front.”
They only ever went to top-tier clinics, where paying after surgery wasn’t even an option.
“How about postponing it three days?” Mona suggested.
“But I already confirmed with Dr. Park!” Reese protested, her tone turning sharp. It was only a million—how bad could the accident be that she couldn’t even spare that?
“Then reschedule,” Mona said curtly. “We’ll talk later.”
And with that, she hung up.
Her head was pounding. She couldn’t delay Reese’s surgery too long—not with how that girl’s face was still mid-recovery. And Stella’s due date was getting closer; after Reese’s procedure, she’d still need time to heal.
“That damn Marie... she’ll pay for this tomorrow,” Mona muttered under her breath, her tone icy.
But even she couldn’t sleep that night.
Marie, on the other hand, was exhausted. The days in Redwood had worn her out completely.
The Tom family’s mansion might not have felt familiar, but when you were that tired, you could sleep anywhere.
And she did—straight through until past ten the next morning.
Derrick had stayed by her side the whole time, worried she might wake up hungry. But seeing how peacefully she slept, he couldn’t bring himself to disturb her.
When she finally stirred, she rubbed her nose and murmured, “You’re awake already?”
“I saw you sleeping so well; didn’t want to wake you,” he said.
It was perfect timing. After such a long rest, Marie felt refreshed.
She stretched, then got up. “Alright, let’s get ready to go.”
“Go?” Derrick blinked, confused.
“Go home for breakfast!”
He went silent. Home? Weren’t they supposed to eat here at the Tom residence?
Derrick froze; his expression darkened. They didn’t make breakfast?
“Don’t forget,” Marie said lightly, “the Tom family has a stepmother now. Did you mistake her for your real one?”
If she’d been his real mom, maybe he’d cut her some slack. But a stepmother? Not a chance.
“That’s a great idea,” Marie said, nodding approvingly. Why didn’t I think of that?

Ch 463 This is stupid now. I understand being scared in his presence enough to not think straight, but she’s a lone more often than not and has plenty of time to think things through, especially if she has time to get gossip from Rivermount and report to Stella....
Ch 457 This is how he finds out that not only did she set his dad up with this woman but that she’s also her aunt? But wasn’t this woman laying in the hospital after an attempted murder?...
Ch 456 So after finding out from Stella herself that she knew him and Ethan, as well as Lillian, had tried to kill her, which likely includes knowledge that Susan was also aware, why would he continue to plead. He should just leave....
