The Year I Stopped Being His novel Chapter 194

Five and a half miles from The White Lake, then three miles, then two...

The numbers on the GPS device kept steadily dropping.

On the pitch-black tundra, Professor Harrison led the way. The light on his head pierced through The Polar Night, acting as a beacon for the entire team.

Diego Solano was panting like an ox at the rear, but he had stopped complaining entirely.

Josh Jace followed closely behind, checking the GPS every few minutes. Sloane Taylor walked shoulder-to-shoulder with him. She kept her head bowed, tracing the footprints ahead of her and dragging herself forward, one agonizing step at a time.

No one spoke. Beneath the black canopy of the sky, the only sound was the howling wind whipping icy grains of snow past their ears.

The next second, a heavy thud echoed through the air.

The figure leading the group suddenly collapsed straight down into the snow!

He fell like a crumbling lighthouse.

There was no warning. One moment Professor Harrison was walking, and the next he slammed flat onto the ground like a wooden board, not even managing a single groan before he hit the ice.

Everyone's heart violently seized!

"Professor!" Josh was the first to dive forward. He dropped to his knees beside the older man and rolled him over.

His face was a horrific sight—ashen and gray, his lips a bruised, dark purple. His eyelids were half-open, but his pupils looked clouded, as if coated in a layer of ash. His mouth hung slightly ajar, revealing a tongue that had also turned purple.

Trembling, Josh placed a hand under his nose, holding his breath for a moment.

"He's breathing... he's still breathing..." his voice shook.

"Professor Harrison? Professor!" Diego leaned close to his ear, shouting desperately to rouse him.

Just then, Professor Harrison's fingers twitched.

He slowly reached into his jacket and pulled out a tiny piece of tin foil. The foil was crumpled and softened by his body heat, the edges worn white, but the medicine inside was miraculously still there.
