Josh checked the GPS in his hand. "I walk fast. Three hours."
"Okay, I understand." Sloane's expression was grave. She opened her mouth to say something else, but ultimately swallowed her words.
"But can Professor Harrison last three hours?" Diego asked.
"Diego, I don't know," Josh admitted bluntly. "But the professor can't wait! Every passing minute puts him in more danger. Do you have any better ideas?!"
"But... but you... can you promise you'll make it back?!"
"I'll be back."
Diego and Sloane stopped asking questions. They knew that in this desperate hour, there was absolutely no other option.
Josh bent down and grabbed the lightest backpack, which held only a little water and some food. After a brief hesitation, he snatched up the gun Lucas Lane had left behind, tucked it into his waistband, and turned back to glance at the unconscious professor on the ground.
"Diego, Sloane, I'm heading out. Wait for me here."
"Take good care of the professor."
Diego nodded. "Yeah, don't worry. We'll watch over him."
"Wait!" Sloane called out suddenly.
She looked at him, taking in his pale complexion, cracked lips, and the frostbite ravaging his cheeks. The bright, sunny boy from her memories felt like a lifetime away.
A moment later, Sloane reached into her collar and pulled off The Obsidian Charm necklace.
The black stone rested in her palm, still radiating her body heat.
"Josh, take this with you."
Josh stared down at the stone. "Sloane—"
"Just take it," Sloane interrupted, pressing the necklace into his hand. "We'll be waiting for you."
