Jack's wife didn't know much more about the illegitimate daughter. Although Penelope had a suspect in mind, she couldn't be certain. As she was leaving the Lees' home, she ran into the old man who had tried to scam her earlier.
The old man looked guilty and pretended not to recognize her, quickly ducking into the courtyard.
Penelope looked back and saw Jack’s wife become agitated at the sight of him.
“Your son is dead! He didn’t leave a single penny for me, only a mountain of debt! A debt collector was just here! And you still have the nerve to ask me for money? Where am I supposed to get it?”
The old man pulled over a stool and sat down heavily.
“It doesn’t matter if my son is dead or alive. Since you married him, you’re part of the Lee family. You have to give me money and take care of me in my old age. You will serve me well!”
“You… you might as well just push my daughter and me to our deaths!”
“Hmph. If you die, there’s still your son and daughter.”
The woman was so furious she was clutching her chest, but she was powerless against the old scoundrel.
Penelope hesitated for a moment, but she couldn't just stand by and watch. She walked back into the courtyard.
“You must be Jack’s father,” she said, raising an eyebrow at the old man.
He hesitated when he saw her before nodding. “Who are you? What do you want with me?”
“Your son owed me a lot of money. Since you’re his father, you can pay it back.”
The old man shot to his feet.
“He owed you the money, why should I have to pay it?”
“Aren’t you his father?”
“So what if I am? I gave him the family business, and he ran it into the ground! Now that he’s dead, I’m supposed to pay his debts? No way!”
Penelope narrowed her eyes. “A son’s debt is his father’s to pay. If you don’t pay up, I’ll have someone break your old legs!”
“You… you go to her! She’s my daughter-in-law! All the money my son made went to her!” the old man said, pointing at Jack’s wife.
Once she was in her car, she called Harold.
“Is Theodore at the office right now?”
“I’m sending you an address now. Please come over.”
Penelope assumed Harold was sending her Theodore’s location, but when she opened the message, it was the address of a styling salon. What was he doing there? After a moment's thought, she drove over.
As soon as she walked in, a female stylist approached her.
“You must be Ms. Penelope Laurier, correct?”
Penelope nodded. “I am.”
“Hello, please come this way.”
Penelope glanced around but didn’t see Theodore. She followed the stylist to a private dressing room in the back. Theodore wasn’t there either. Just as she was about to ask, a wardrobe assistant rolled in a rack of gowns and asked her to choose one.
