Penelope shook her head. While she wasn't completely trashed like Marin, she was still a bit dizzy, her limbs feeling slightly weak.
"You boys better call Ellison first. Tell him to back off immediately. I am not someone he can afford to mess with." As she spoke, she discreetly scanned their surroundings, hoping a pedestrian might walk by and help her call the cops.
But it was early morning in the club district. The streets were dead.
"We're just here to throw punches, not deliver messages."
The two men stepped toward Penelope, cracking their knuckles.
Penelope grit her teeth. These guys were huge, but if she fought back with everything she had, she might not necessarily lose. Thinking this gave her a boost of courage. She was just about to strike first when she noticed two more men emerging from an adjacent alley.
Just as tall, just as muscular, and looking just as vicious.
"Ellison, that son of a bitch. He actually sent four men to beat up one woman!"
He was giving her way too much credit.
"Don't bother putting up a fight. Just take the beating quietly, and we might go a little easier on you."
Penelope knew she was screwed. Fighting four guys at once guaranteed she would take a severe beating. If she had known this would happen, she wouldn't have gone out partying with Marin last night. After all, they were still in Ellison's territory.
Just as the four thugs closed in and Penelope felt a wave of despair, a sleek black Maybach suddenly pulled up to the curb. A second later, Theodore stepped out.
He did not even glance at the four men. He simply shot Penelope an exasperated glare and marched toward her, ending a call on his phone.
He hung up just as he reached her.
"What are you doing here?" Penelope asked, utterly shocked.
Theodore narrowed his eyes. "Weren't you the one who called me last night?"
Penelope's memory was a bit fuzzy. Halfway through the drinks, she did remember calling Theodore and giving him a rough rundown of the day's events.
Oh, right. She had called him to say she hired Marin.
