Penelope hadn't expected Julian to flip sides so quickly. Just as her annoyance began to flare, Julian looked up at her.
"Mom, Heather's food is incredible! Come try some."
Penelope scoffed softly. She walked over to the dining table and prepared to sit down.
"Ms. Laurier, you haven't eaten lunch yet? Oh my, I assumed you had already eaten, so I didn't..." Heather put on an incredibly fake look of apology.
Penelope narrowed her eyes. So Heather was implying she hadn't cooked a portion for her, meaning she wasn't allowed to eat?
Hilarious. This was her house!
Penelope shot Heather a glacial stare. She sat down right next to Julian, pulled over the plate and silverware that had originally been set for Theodore, and took a bite.
"It really is delicious."
She chewed slowly, looking up at Heather with a challenging raise of her eyebrow.
Seeing Theodore coming down the stairs, Heather had no choice but to scurry back to the kitchen, scoop another plate of rice, and place it in front of him.
"I didn't make enough for Ms. Laurier, but since she took a seat, she can have the last plate. I won't have anything to eat, but that's perfectly fine..."
She directed her tragic speech at Theodore, but he completely ignored her, keeping his eyes locked on Penelope.
"Do you still want pasta?"
Penelope took another bite of the rice. "Someone already cooked. It'd be a shame to waste it."
Theodore nodded. "Once we're done, let's head over to Zenith Group's new marine amusement park."
"Sounds perfect."
Heather had basically delivered an entire monologue to a brick wall.
"Mom, don't you think Heather's cooking is amazing?" Julian asked again.
That was the final blow. Her pride shattered, Heather practically launched herself out of her chair.
"My brother is still in his room. I need to go check on him." Grabbing the pathetic excuse, she fled toward the first-floor guest room.
Penelope flicked Julian on the forehead, asking how he came up with the idea to hire Heather as a maid.
"She wants to leech off Dad while showing off her domestic skills. The title of maid suits her perfectly."
Penelope nodded. "Fair point."
The family spent the entire afternoon at the amusement park, returning to the villa just as the sun dipped below the horizon. The house was brightly lit, and through the window, they could see Heather bustling around the kitchen. She truly had zero shame.
As they approached the front door, they noticed someone huddled in the shadows. It was Heath.
"You guys go inside first."
With a brief instruction, Theodore walked over to Heath. After exchanging a few low words, Theodore pulled the boy to his feet and led him away toward the dark beach.
