Surprisingly, Penelope actually retrieved a bottle of liquor and two glasses.
"Care to join me?" Heather taunted.
Penelope didn't reply. She poured the drinks, sliding one glass over to Heather and placing the other in front of herself.
Heather's lips twitched in amusement. She snatched her glass and downed it in one gulp. Without waiting for Penelope, she grabbed the bottle, poured herself a second glass, and slammed that one back too.
"Did you know my family used to be rich? My dad was in construction, my mom was a college professor. We had a perfect life until Heath collapsed at school one day. My parents rushed him to the hospital, only to find out he had a malignant tumor on his heart. That was the end of our happiness. They drained everything we had to save him, but he kept deteriorating until he hit end-stage heart failure. The only cure was a transplant, but he would never survive the official waitlist."
Penelope scoffed. "Your mother taught at Orenth University. She was the one who targeted Norton first, wasn't she?"
"Bingo. She took her students for a medical check-up and stole their serum samples. My dad used an overseas clinic to run the matches and zeroed in on three students. He set traps for all three of them, but Norton was the only one dumb enough to fall for it." Heather shrugged carelessly. "His fault for being gullible."
Penelope's knuckles turned white as she clenched her fists. "You butchered an innocent boy to save your own. Does your conscience not eat you alive?"
Heather looked her dead in the eye and nodded solemnly. "My mom killed herself right after the surgery."
Penelope was momentarily stunned. "She thought that would absolve her?"
"She knew she committed a grave sin. But to save Heath, she had zero regrets."
"Despicable."
"Curse her all you want. If she can hear you from hell, it might actually make her feel better."
Penelope frowned. "He's an accessory to Norton's murder. Why would we..."
"Because the heart beating in his chest belongs to Norton! The person you love!" Heather screamed, cutting her off.
Penelope gritted her teeth, battling the overwhelming urge to strangle the woman.
"If my brother dies, that heart dies with him!"
"We've already accepted that Norton is gone."
"But can you accept watching him die twice?"
