Chloe stared at Jamie, her eyes brimming with a hurt so deep that tears began to stream down her face. He had concrete evidence?
Even after she had someone get to Aaron and threaten him into changing his story, Jamie still found out?
Did that include the incident with the pool equipment? If so, why hadn't he interrogated Sabrina and Zina?
She sank onto the sofa, utterly defeated. After a long moment, she shot back up, her hands trembling as she once again clutched the sleeve of Jamie's shirt.
“Jamie, don’t be so cruel to me,” she sobbed. “I don’t want to go to jail. I can apologize to Suzie! If she forgives me, this will all go away, right? Or you could convince her not to press charges, couldn't you?”
Jamie’s expression had turned to ice. His sharp gaze swept over her for a mere second.
Chloe pressed on, her voice a low, desperate cry. “Jamie, I can’t go to jail. If the media finds out, my career will be ruined. Would you really stand by and watch my life fall apart?”
“So you’re worried about your career? Worried about your life being ruined?” Jamie’s voice cut through her pleas like a shard of glass. “What about Suzie’s career? What about her life?!”
Shaking her head in disbelief, Chloe’s face contorted with pain and resentment. “Jamie, why do you suddenly care so much about her?” she demanded in a hushed, furious tone. “Why? Didn’t you despise her? You were desperate to divorce her, desperate to find proof she was cheating. Why are you fighting her battles now? Do you regret it? Are you trying to win her back?”
Even as she cried, her thoughts were full of vicious anger toward Suzie. That pregnancy… she wasn’t a fool! Suzie played the part of a gentle lamb, always so frail and prone to fainting spells, but it was all an act. What a schemer!
Peeking through the crack in the door, she saw Chloe slowly pull her hand back from his sleeve. From under her collar, Chloe produced a necklace.
The distance was too great for Suzie to see it clearly.
A glint of light from the pendant caught Jamie's peripheral vision. He glanced over, and as his eyes focused on the object in Chloe's palm, the cold look on his face turned even darker.
In the next instant, he lunged forward, snatching the pendant. “Where did you get this?!” he demanded, his voice laced with urgency.
