“Mrs. Baylor, you’re finally here! Aaron has been getting anxious,” Lucy said, hurrying up the steps to help her down.
Suzie glanced at Lucy, her gaze then shifting to Aaron standing a short distance away. “What’s the rush?” she asked calmly as she descended the stairs.
Aaron immediately lowered his head. “Mr. Baylor instructed me to bring you over as soon as possible,” he answered respectfully.
Suzie paused, pulled her arm from Lucy’s grasp, and walked directly to Aaron. “Let’s go.”
In the car, Suzie’s eyes drifted occasionally to Aaron, who was focused on driving. “Aaron,” she began in a casual tone, “Jamie is covering for Chloe’s crimes. Aren’t you afraid that working for a boss like that will only invite trouble down the line?”
A shiver ran down Aaron’s back. He took a deep breath to compose himself before replying, “I’m not fully aware of the specifics, but I don’t believe Mr. Baylor is that kind of person. He has a strong sense of justice in the business world; he wouldn’t do anything criminal.”
His answer didn't surprise Suzie; in fact, it was what she had expected. Jamie’s men were, of course, loyal to him. She dismissed her comment as nothing more than venting.
After a while, she spoke again. “Richard knows about the divorce and my pregnancy. Was it you who told him?”
“Mrs. Baylor,” Aaron responded immediately and decisively, “it’s not my place to speak out of turn. I wouldn’t say a single word.”
Her brows furrowed in concern. “Richard, are you not feeling well again? You look so pale.”
Richard looked at her with sorrowful eyes. “Oh, my dear, silly child,” he said, his voice heavy with emotion. “With this terrible misunderstanding between you and Jamie, I haven’t been able to eat or sleep.”
Seeing him like this, Suzie felt a pang of guilt and heartache. Her voice caught in her throat. “Richard, I’m so sorry to have worried you.”
He patted her head affectionately. “It’s alright, dear. Don’t cry. Come on, I’ll go up with you.”
