Richard, standing to the side, sighed with a heavy frown.
“How did such a lovely couple end up like this? Jamie, you shouldn’t jump to conclusions before you know the facts. I came here on my own today, not because Suzie called me.”
“Grandpa, you don’t have to lie to protect her. Not a single word out of her mouth is true,” Jamie said, impatience sharpening his tone.
Richard sighed again, looking at Jamie with a flash of disappointment. He couldn't understand how his grandson, always so sharp and brilliant, could be so blind when it came to matters of the heart.
He pointed a trembling finger at Jamie, his voice filled with hurt. “You child, how can you not even believe me anymore? What did I teach you? In business, you know to analyze everything and think before you act. Why are you so dense when it comes to love? What do you gain from this? What can you possibly get, other than pushing Suzie further and further away?”
Richard pleaded earnestly, but Suzie had no desire to listen to their conversation any longer.
She slowly turned to Richard, her voice calm. “Richard, I’ve disappointed you. But please, stay out of this today.” Her tone was soft and sincere.
Richard looked at her, his heart aching with sympathy and helplessness. He knew Suzie was a good girl—kind, gentle, and smart. He could also see that she had always genuinely loved Jamie.
He sighed. “Suzie, you two need to talk properly. I’m sure this is all just a series of misunderstandings. Talk it out. Open up to each other.”
Suzie’s eyes flickered as she nodded.
Seeing his struggle, a contemptuous smile touched Suzie’s lips.
“And one more thing,” she added. “I can’t wait to see you pay for your arrogance.”
Before Jamie could respond, Suzie stood on her tiptoes and whispered in his ear, “After you kill the children, remember to have someone run the tests again. And make sure you watch them yourself, from start to finish, until you see the results.”
With that, she stepped back. When her eyes met his, a maniacal smile spread across her face. Without another word, she turned and walked decisively toward the medical staff waiting nearby.
