The Years Between Signing and Seeing novel Chapter 26

Perhaps he thought this was the only way to fool Richard.

"Suzie, please, go with Jamie and see a doctor. I'll worry otherwise."

Unable to refuse Richard's persistent urging, Suzie reluctantly followed Jamie out of the hospital room.

The moment they were a few feet from the door, Suzie pulled her arm free from his grasp. That brief separation left her with an indescribable feeling. The image of them leaning on each other for warmth and support was something she had secretly yearned for.

In just a few minutes, they had moved from the world inside the room to the world outside—two different realities, two different couples. A whirlwind of complex emotions churned within Suzie, rooting her to the spot.

As for Jamie, the soft warmth of her body had vanished from his arms. His hand hovered in the empty air for a long moment before he slowly let it fall.

Neither of them spoke. The silence was broken only when a nurse rushed past, muttering about a patient in another room with a severe GI bleed.

Jamie was the first to break the stillness. "Let's get you checked out."

His voice pulled Suzie from her thoughts, though she still seemed dazed. "N-no, that's not necessary. I'm fine."

With that, she quickly turned to face the wall, fighting to suppress the tears welling in her eyes.

Once she had regained her composure, she turned back. "I'm relieved Richard is doing well. I should go. It's nine now. I'll see you at City Hall at ten."

She started to walk away, each step feeling heavy.

Lost in thought, she forced herself to walk on, heading toward the elevators without a backward glance.

Jamie stood frozen, watching her retreating figure, her posture screaming of finality. His expression was a storm of barely concealed anger, frustration, and a sliver of sorrow.

Just then, his phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled his gaze back, opening a text from Aaron. It contained a message and a long series of billing screenshots.

【Mr. Baylor, I've tracked the card. All the purchases were made by Margaret. The items were all shipped to her son and daughter—Suzie's younger twin siblings—who are studying abroad.】

【Also, they used Suzie's marriage settlement to fund the twins' overseas education. As for the designer bags, jewelry, and other valuables from the manor, Margaret secretly sold some of them. Suzie sold the rest. The money from the items she sold seems to be connected to that place she visits frequently.】

Jamie stared at the message, his knuckles white as he gripped the phone. His brows furrowed, and his eyes, fixed on the words "that place," grew colder and sharper.
