Chapter 267
I swiveled toward Neo, focused, stretched
Maybe too eager this time.
–
When I blinked, my view was limited to Neo’s chest, my nose right against the shirt he had found in closet of the cabin, when we both decided his clothes from the tomb were beyond repair.
Tilting my head up, I looked straight up into his eyes. Like this, he could so easily kiss me, if he wou only lean down.
Heat rushed into my face and I stumbled back. “I, uh… sorry!”
He tilted his head again in slight confusion, and I could admit it was adorable, especially when he scrunched his nose ever so slightly.
“I don’t understand why you are trying so hard,” he said. “This cabin is perfect for us. We have each other, and I could provide for you. Why would you need anything else?”
“People depend on me,” I said.
He shook his head. “They are not here.”
“They are waiting. My mates, they –
”
Neo’s entire posture changed. He wasn’t relaxed anymore. He had gone entirely rigid, his body tensing his muscles bulging, his hands in fists.
“Your… mates?”
“Yes, I, uh… have four?”
–
A low growl escaped from the back of his throat. “I will fight them all to the death. None will claim you over me. I will be your one and only. Your true mate. Your ” He stopped himself suddenly, and deflated so quickly, it was like he hadn’t gotten mad at all.
He relaxed his hands and stared at his palms, his confusion returning
“… don’t know why I said any of that,” he admitted and took a step back from me.
“Neo.” I wanted to reach out to him but i stilled my hand. That whatever that had just been had been somewhat frightening it was like some kind of possessive monster had come over han
But, I had already dealt with four very strong possessive Alphas I could handle this one too..
If he actually was my fifth mate
“Do you understand how mates work?” I asked, keeping my voice gentle, not wanting to set him off again, or for him to spiral if he thought i was closing him out I wasn’t We just had to talk about things.

1.” He looked up from his hands to my face, and in his eyes, he seemed as lost as he had been wher he’d first awakened in that tomb. “No.”
“A mate is a gift, and not every werewolf has one. I’m blessed, because I have multiple. Four I know of and a fifth that remains a mystery.”
“How can that be?” he asked. “Only one man should have you.” He didn’t say me, but it was implied.
“My mates make me stronger, and I do the same for them. I love them, as they love me. Each relationship is unique and beautiful, and I wouldn’t trade any of them. Yes, they don’t always get along with each other, but they are trying. And we are all growing closer.”
“They… share you…?”
“Our hearts beat as one,” I said, trying to help him understand.
His face remained puzzled, though he started to nod. “You said there is a fifth.”
“Yes. But I don’t know who it is yet.”
“Do you have some idea?” he asked.
I worried my bottom lip with my teeth as I looked at me.
“Do you think it could be me?” he asked.
“I don’t know,” I answered honestly. As honestly as I could.
