“I believe in you,” he said. “But I’d…” He cleared his throat. “I’d like one night alone together with you before we try that.”
I stared at him, all other thoughts abandoning my brain. One night alone. One night together.
Was he implying that he wanted to be with me… intimately? So soon?
“I… uh…” My mind was a mess and my nerves were fully frazzled.
Was I ready for that? He was attractive yes, and the idea of sleeping with him wasn’t unappealing. But it felt very quick. I hadn’t had time to talk to the others about it. And the others… they were probably worried about me. How could I have sex with someone else, even another mate, when they didn’t know
where I was?
Neo’s eyes were pleading. “Just for tonight. Then we can do whatever you want to do tomorrow.”
“Okay…” I said, unsure how I would ever be able to deny him when he looked at me like that, with those sad eyes that seemed to carry the weight of eons within them.
We couldn’t have sex though, not yet. I’d stick to that, not wanting to rush this beautiful thing between us and risk ruining it and all my other bonds.
We continued to train, and though I did well teleporting Neo and myself to various nearby locations together, I remained distracted.
After, when it grew dark outside, we returned into the house. Neo caught us dinner, which we ate. I was so nervous that I had to force it down and then my stomach was unhappy with me.
Eventually, it came time to sleep.
I moved to my spot from the night before, my furs still piled there. Neo came with me, his hand on the small of my back. I looked up at him in nervousness, but he looked back at me with a steady, cool, confidence.
“Neo… I don’t know if I’m ready…” I said.
He tilted his head. “For me to hold you while you sleep?”
I blinked. “Huh?”
“That’s what I wanted to do,” he said. “I want to hold you all night. To feel you beaide me. Before i have to let you go and share”
“You just want to…? Oh. Oh, okay.” At once, my own nerves vanished.
We arranged ourselves on the floor. I rested on my side, my body an S shape. Then Neo came in, slotting his body perfectly against mine. His arm came around my waist, and I sighed happily, relaxing.
“Good?” he asked.

“Very good.”
With the fire and the furs, everything was very warm, except surprisingly for Neo. His skin maintained a slight chill to the touch.
I frowned a little, when he couldn’t see, realizing that what this must have meant.
I had thought his curse had only kept him in a corpse–like state. I’d thought his memory loss was a part of that, and would recover in time. But what if he was still actively cursed? What if that was why he couldn’t hear his wolf, or shift, and why he was so cold?
How cruel. Whoever had done this to him deserved some kind of punishment. If we ever found out who cursed him like this, I’d give them a piece of my mind. If it had been the vampires, and that seemed likel it was only one more reason to fight against them.
“My mate…” Neo whispered, his voice filled with something like wonder, as he held me close.
“My mate,” I replied. He might have been physically stronger than me, but I still felt protective over him. I would save him from this curse. Somehow.
I wouldn’t stop until I did.
The next morning, I stood with Neo in our teleporting position. As our practiced continued yesterday, we found it easier if Neo stood behind me, his arms around my waist.
We were like that now, looking forward.
