Thorne and I got into the car. Max turned it on and started to drive. I raised a hand to wave at my mother as we drove away. She
waved back.
Then we pulled out of the warehouse, and I couldn’t see her anymore.
Along the road, headed back toward our safe house, I pushed my mother out of my mind and thought of more pressing matters.
“Where’s Kairos?”
“He went wild,” Thome said from the backseat.
“You said that, but where.”
“You can’t be thinking of going after him,” Max said, his grip tightening on the steering wheel. “We just got you back. No way am I letting you frolic straight back into danger.”
“I’m not frolicking –”
“You know what I mean.”
“I’m not going to lose Kairos to vampires,” I said.
“More likely, you’ll lose him to himself,” Thorne said. “He nearly attacked Valentin on his way out, shifting and everything.”
That didn’t totally surprise me. Even without being wolf–crazed, Kairos had been quick for a fight. Our early days had been
evidence of that.
But things were different now. That hate we had thought we felt for each other became love instead. Though even when I thought I hated Kairos, I still wouldn’t have left him to the vampires, crazed or not.
“We have to go after him,” I said.
Max growled a little, but I held firm, unwavering. I wasn’t going to argue about this. Under my hard stare, Max eventually sighed. “We don’t even know where he is.”
“Sure we do,” Thorne said. “All we have to do is follow the bodies.”
“Can I lead us to him? By following the bond,” I asked Max. “That’s how you found me, wasn’t it?”
“This is a bad idea,” Max grumbled, but still told me how he had successfully meditated to follow the bond.
He was worried about my safety, I was sure, but I thought deep down, he might also be worried about Kairos,
We were better together all of us.
“Kairos isn’t a bad guy,” Thorne said. “Now that Zora is with us again. We should be able to bring him back. Well, you should, Zora. But be ready for this. He’s not going to be himself. He might even lash out at you”
Max started, “If he tries, I’ll”
“We aren’t killing Kairos,” I said quickly.
“…I’ll punch him,” Max amended.
After meditating, I was able to direct Max toward where I felt Kairos to be. Eventually, we had to leave the car parked at the side of a dirt road as we started off through a field toward a collection of old ruins They were crumpled stone structures, part of a wall. Of a castle? I wasn’t sure. Nature had reclaimed most of it, making it indiscernible now
There wasn’t much time for sightseeing anyway, not with the sheer number of vampire corpses littering the ground

“Gods, it looks like a warzone,” I gasped.
Max stopped me for a moment before I almost stepped on another body. In the quiet, he almost looked like he was listening. Then he said, “Kairos cleared them all out. He’s the only one left.”
“He’s here?” I asked.
“He’s by the wall.”
That was enough for me. I took off running, careful to move around the bodies, not wanting to disturb them, even in death.
“Kairos!” I called.
“Guess we aren’t going for the element of surprise,” Thorne said.
