Joanna stared at the child in her arms, a deep sense of disgust flashing in her eyes.
She had to have her own child with Chester, and soon.
Raymond's reaction had put her on high alert.
No matter how close she got to the children, she could never compete with their own mother's influence.
That night, after tucking Celia in, Joanna quietly went to Chester's room.
She greedily watched the man on the bed.
Even though Chester had lost his memory, he had never taken things further with her.
She had tried playing hard to get for a while, but after losing his memory, the man was as responsive as a block of wood.
Joanna lifted a corner of the blanket.
She tiptoed and slipped into Chester's arms.
The moment she touched him, a large hand suddenly seized her neck.
"Who is it?!" The man's voice was filled with thick hostility.
It felt like if he had been a second slower to react, he would have snapped her neck.
Joanna slapped at his hand, letting out a hoarse plea for help. "Chester, it's me... Let... go."
Only then did Chester seem to snap out of it. He released her and turned on the bedside lamp.
Joanna's face was flushed red from the choking.
"Joanna, what are you doing here? Did I hurt you?" Chester asked, his voice filled with concern.
Tears welled up in Joanna's eyes from the pain. She looked aggrieved. "I'm fine, Chester. I just got scared. I had a nightmare and missed you."
Hearing this, Chester's tense posture finally relaxed a little.
He soothed her, "Joanna, it was just a dream. Don't be afraid."
Joanna burrowed into his arms, her soft hand tracing circles on his back.
"Chester, I want to sleep with you tonight, okay?"
Her invitation was heavy with meaning.
But the man remained still.
Just as Joanna was about to press further, the phone on the bedside table suddenly rang.
"Joanna, don't mess around."
In Chester's eyes, she was still a little girl.
