Instead, Cynthia just laughed at him.
“You just don’t get it! You have no idea how sad it is for a child to not have a mother!”
Cynthia listened to Raymond’s heartfelt declaration and grew thoughtful.
“Have you really changed your ways?”
“Of course!”
“And you’re over that Miss Sinclair?”
“She’s the other woman. My mom and dad are married! Even if she dated my dad before, she’s an ex-girlfriend with no boundaries!”
“If she and Celestine both fell into the water, who would you save?”
“I’d only save my mom!”
Cynthia nodded in satisfaction.
He was teachable. Not a complete idiot.
Her days of guidance hadn't been in vain!
She really was a great teacher!
Cynthia beamed.
Raymond felt even more miserable. “My mom doesn’t want me anymore, and you’re smiling! Do you even have a heart?!”
“It’s your own fault your mom doesn’t want you! After how you all treated her before, who wouldn’t be heartbroken?!” Cynthia’s voice was even louder than his.
Raymond immediately deflated, losing all his earlier fire.
“I know I was wrong. So what should I do now?”
Cynthia beckoned him closer. “It’s not all bad that Celestine is taking you back to Silvermere. Didn’t you say your dad has amnesia? Go back and see how badly that Miss Sinclair has messed with his head. If he’s a lost cause, you can just run away again. If you run away again, Celestin definitely won’t abandon you.”
Raymond remembered how he had starved himself, eating only one meal a day just to see Celestine last time, and a wave of misery washed over him.
“Is there a way to do it without starving?”
“Sure,” Cynthia said, looking him up and down. “Once your mom disowns you, you won’t have to worry about going hungry.”
Raymond was crushed and started crying again.
Cynthia’s face fell.
She had never met a boy who cried so much.
On the day of the flight to Silvermere, Raymond woke up early and packed his own things.
He didn’t cry or make a fuss, nor did he pester Celestine about wanting to stay.
